Judith Still

Professor of French and Critical Theory, University of Nottingham, UK.

Professor Still’s current research is principally in the eighteenth and the twentieth centuries. All of her research is informed by feminist and poststructuralist theory (in particular the work of Jacques Derrida, Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray) and her abiding concern has been the question of inequality understood in the broadest sense, and how sexual, class or cultural differences are represented and theorised, including the question of the ways in which inequalities are mitigated or enhanced by social, political and economic systems. Professor Still works on textual economies, and the question of reading and is currently researching the question of hospitality between individuals, and between the collectivity and the individual.

Conference Theme

Tekhne, technique, technology: three terms which broach the divide between knowledge and the world, between concepts and their applications. The etymological base of its variants found in both French and English, tekhne is both an art or craft as well as the knowledge that comes from the practice or discipline of that art or craft as it is repeated over time. As such, it signals less a split between pure and applied knowledge than deconstructs the distinction between them, since knowledge does not so much precede practice but—as in an art or craft—is just as much a product of it.

We invite papers that explore a wide range of interpretations of the conference theme: from the production of French knowledges to Francophone representations of the technical to culturally specific uptakes of new technologies. We are especially interested in papers that reflect upon the discipline of French and Francophone Studies, its techniques, the technologies it employs and deploys and thus its applications beyond itself as a discipline, and its appropriations of other disciplines into its fold, as French and Francophone Studies extends beyond its own boundaries to use techniques and technologies that originate in other far flung fields.

Possible topics might include:

• Technology in French and Francophone Studies today
  • technology of/in cinema; technology in literature; technology in language learning; curriculum design; technologies of/in everyday life; cultural history of technology
• The place of French and Francophone Studies in the current research context inside and outside of Australia
  • the future of the Humanities; funding policy; interdisciplinary research.
• Applications of French and Francophone Studies
  • graduate destinations; industry links; applied linguistics; interdisciplinarity.
• Discipline as technique
  • the concept of discipline; curriculum design; language pedagogy; Foucault studies.

• French ways of understanding
  • philosophy; critical theory; film studies; literary studies; visual studies.

The participation of delegates from other disciplines in which knowledges produced in French and Francophone cultures are used is greatly encouraged.

In addition, as is the custom of this conference, papers relating to French and Francophone Studies but not directly addressing the theme will also be considered.

17^ème Colloque de la Société Australienne d’Études Françaises, Brisbane, 15-17 juillet 2009. Organisée par l’Université de Queensland .

Tekhne, technique, technologie : trois termes qui effacent la division qui existe entre la connaissance et le monde, entre les concepts et leurs applications. Base étymologique de ses variantes en langue française comme en langue anglaise, tekhne désigne non seulement un art mais aussi une connaissance, un savoir-faire qui résulte de la pratique de cet art répétée à travers les temps. Plutôt que d’opérer une division entre les connaissances pures et appliquées, ce terme déconstruit cette distinction car les connaissances qu’il désigne ne précèdent pas l’acte mais en découlent.

Nous invitons donc des propositions de communication qui interrogent cette thématique sous tous ses angles, qu’il s’agisse de la production de modes de savoir spécifiquement français, de représentations de la technologie dans un contexte français ou de la mise en pratique de nouvelles technologies  dans des contextes culturels spécifiques. Nous nous intéressons tout particulièrement à des communications qui examinent la discipline des études françaises et francophones, ses techniques, les technologies qu’elle emploie et déploie et par la suite ses applications au-delà d’elle-même en tant que discipline, c’est-à-dire à ses appropriations de techniques et de technologies élaborées dans d’autres domaines.

Parmi les questions à aborder :

• La technologie dans les études françaises et francophones aujourd’hui.
  • La technologie dans le / du cinéma ; la technologie dans la littérature ; la technologie dans l’apprentissage des langues ; les technologies dans le / du quotidien ; l’histoire culturelle de la technologie.
• Les recherches en études françaises et francophones dans le contexte politique contemporain en Australie et ailleurs.
  • L’avenir des sciences humaines ; la politique du financement gouvernemental ; les recherches interdisciplinaires.
• Les applications des études françaises et francophones.
  • Les destinations des diplômés ; les liens avec l’industrie ; la linguistique appliquée ; l’interdisciplinarité.
• La discipline comme technique.
  • Le concept de discipline ; la conception d’un programme universitaire de français ; la pédagogie linguistique ; les études foucaldiennes.
• La pensée française.
  • La philosophie ; la critique littéraire ; les études cinématographiques ; les études visuelles.

Désirant interroger les études françaises et francophones dans un contexte plus large, nous voulons également encourager la participation de conférenciers qui ne s’identifient pas nécessairement à la discipline des études françaises et francophones mais qui se servent pourtant de savoirs français et francophones.
