Transphobia: Critical Perspectives on Anti-Transgender Violence

*Call for Articles*

*Transphobia: Critical Perspectives on Anti-Transgender Violence
(working
title)*

I am seeking articles, particularly interdisciplinary and
intersectional
discussions, about the many issues of violence and related
discriminations
faced by transgender people. The anthology will also present social
justice
responses to transphobic violence and
discrimination.

Although the media focuses most of its attention on hate crimes,
transgender
people are affected by violence in many other forms. These include, for
example, police brutality, bullying, sexual assault, forced
institutionalization, incarceration, elder abuse, and crimes against
partners and allies. Sometimes the violence is direct and
physical; other times the violence is indirect, covert or
psychological. The
oppressions faced by transgender people come from many different social
and
economic structures, from a wide range of ideologies, and affect many
communities. In turn, many different ways exist of healing and
preventing
both overt and hidden forms of violence. This anthology hopes to
present a
wide range of perspectives on violence that affects transgender people
and
the multiple communities that we live in.

I wish to also solicit discussions of oppressions that are not often
classified as violence. These might include, for example, the denial of
medical care, invasions of privacy, and economic insecurity.

Articles should range from 1500-3500 words. Some possible topics are
suggested below. However, writers are encouraged to approach the topic
in
innovative ways. Original work is strongly preferred; work published
elsewhere will be considered on a very limited basis.

*Deadline: April 20, 2008. Questions, abstracts or full articles, plus
a
brief biography should be sent to: rmjuang (at)

and research-based perspectives. Discussions that consider non-physical
or
psychological forms of violence are welcome.
