Kurtz is a member of the artist group Critical Art Ensemble and Assistant Professor of Art at the Carnegie Mellon University. His areas of focus are contemporary art history and theory as well as poststudio practices. Kurtz received an B.A. in Sociology in 1981 and an M.A. in Social Thought & Sociological Theory in 1983, both from the University of North Texas.
